Dixy at Download: Music is my life

Posted on 14 June, 2009 by Martin Kielty [return]

RockRadio blogger Dixy Sixx (who's used to this) picks five tracks played over the weekend that mean more to her than just an assemblage of notes, words and thumps - in more ways than one...

It's Been A While - Staind
An embarressing one to like, but even more embarressing for its story. While I'll leave absolutely all the details to the imagination (and the dark dark recess of my memory) this is the song I lost my virginity to. It only lasted the one song. "It's been a while" - like the irony?

Home Sweet Home - Motley Crue
Towards the end of the festival everyone starts thinking about their nice warm bed and all the creature comforts of home. This song was written towards the end of a two-year tour when Motley's label finally told them it was ending. That was after the band had threatened to kill the bosses' families - but it doesn't affect the sentiment of the song. Every Motley gig I've seen has closed with this track and it's a special one for me because after days in a field with the wife, home is indeed a sweet sweet place to be...

Falling Away From Me - Korn
My absolute absolute favourite song of all time and the one that really brings on the whiplash! I bought Issues, my first alternative album, when I was 11 and I never looked back. I've never found a band or album I love quite as much (although some come very close). But this one song brings back the memories of angst and confusion about my life as it changed without my understanding. Now I mosh to it with a great big smile - although apparently life doesn't get any easier.

Bag on Your Head - Hardcore Superstar
You know those songs that make your body jump around completely involuntarily? This one moves me with such a passion that I've witnessed snot flying out of my nose during the chorus. And the best bit is that the killer bogey landed in the hair of a chick who'd practically crushed me to death earlier on as she tried to get her fat ass on the barrier. Retribution - sweet!

Man in the Box - Steel Panther (well, Alice in Chains)
Me and the wife first saw Steel Panther in the Key Club on the Sunset Strip last year. From the Titty-cam to Satchel playing a solo suspended above the crowd, it was an amazing show. Loads of celebs frequent the band's gigs and if they're of a musical persuasion they end up joining the show. The drummer from Powerman 5000 was special guest star that night, along with an actor-model-muso whose name escapes me. I'd never had a passion for Alice in Chains until Steel Panther totally rocked Man in the Box out for me. After the show me and the wife decided the UK deeply needed some SP - and sure enough they've made a massive splash here. We were terrified when we found out they weren't playing covers, but we shouldn't have been!
